Yesterday I gave a new friend a birthday
present. I painted this picture a long time ago. I didn't know what
inspired me and to tell the truth I had forgotten about it. As I was
preparing photos of pictures for my website. This pastel on paper
emerged from my files. There it was! The perfect picture for my friend's
birthday present. My friend has a house full of hatboxes, antiques,
treasures and beautiful possessions. She likes to surround herself with
memories. How did I know that someday I would find the perfect person
for this still life of Hatbox and Rose? Why does this surprise me.
There will
be someone who will see in a painting something they value. What attracts me to paint a subject? A really good question.
Had
a good day in the studio yesterday, most Thursdays I paint with a
friend. She is a lovely person who wanted to learn to paint because she
had a painting in her head that needed to materialize. Not only has she
painted that one, but it keeps flowing.
I am instructing her with painting technicalities. I say that because she is really self determining and knows what she want to accomplish, she just needs guidance with the how to get there. I see joy in her discoveries and each project she takes on brings new adventures in technique. I am also surprised that I can spontaneously guide her when necessary without advanced preparation. Now I can see that doing something like painting over a life time has filled me with deep accumulated knowledge of the subject. Something I always envied in others but failed to see in my self. In the past I have prepared thoroughly for teaching classes. Done my homework, so to speak. There is so much to know and even now I feel have just begun. This is a deep well. Painting is my joy. Sharing the joy is a blessed thing.
Got rid of the latest wasps nest and
rearranged my studio this morning. Maybe hurricane scares are a good
thing periodically. Forces me to rearrange and tidy up before getting
to the good part, the painting While we were exiled in Dallas I did some little watercolors.
So it wasn't a complete waste of time. Glad I brought my little watercolor set. Left in such a rush,
It's for sale in my gallery-shop.
SEPT.1, 2017 WAY OF GIVING BACK For all those who helped me get through Hurricane Sandy When we went through Hurricane Sandy many generous folks stepped up and helped us. Its time to return their generosity. I was inspired to paint this picture and offer it for sale, 50% to be given to Catholic Charities of Galveston, Houston, so they can offer assistance to some family who really could use a boost right now. What goes around, comes around. Hurricane Harvey is headed for Texas and I am praying tor the folks there (family included). I remember clearly when Hurricane Sandy hit my home /studio in New Jersey. The studio was in the garage on the ground level and 7 feet of water decimated it. I was away at the time and when we returned my family had arrived before us. They carried most of my crea- tions up to the deck. There was Muck from the tides on the oil paintings but they were salvageable ( I left some on one as a reminder). The watercolors and pastels were in sealed plastic bins and had floated and were safe. Somethings were lost but that was ok,we were safe. It was not until I went across the street to help a less fortunate neighbor (they lost everything, never did return)clean up the yard that I discovered that my paint brushes had floated around the neighborhood and were my reward for being neighborly.(I did not need a reward). The only way to recover after a disaster is to reach out to those in need. The government is pretty useless in the moment. Neighbors, local charities and churches are what will be there for those affected. I am praying for the people whose lives will be hurt.

HORNET"S NEST Another excuse to not be in my studio??? I hope not, Got stung this morning just as I was opening the studio door. The exterminator is supposed to call me back. Last time I posted I was injured setting up the studio. Wish I could say I have been painting diligently ever since but that would not be true. I spent the cooler months doing plein air studies with some fellow town artists ( Some interesting lunches too). Got several paintings done of local places and I am actually pleased to have embraced my new surroundings this way. Telling the story of my transition from Jersey girl to Floridian in my art helps me to realize I have made a good move. It is really a fine place to live. Of course, I still don't thrive in a hot climate, but it is manageable. Feb 15,2017 DOLDRUMS or incubation period? Been here before, Time for open reception of ideas and showing up for the work. On with the day. DEC 28, 2016 FINALLY TUNING UP MY STUDIO. Love the time After The Holidays.. just selfish I guess. Finally get to doing the things I have been wanting to get to. Got a new work bench for Christmas and now all I have to do is put it together. The box weighs a ton. This should be interesting. The studio has a built in workbench, but it vibrates when using power tools and during the summer the vibration caused a sharp item I had stored on the top shelf to fall and gash my leg. One thing leads to another. Left a scar. So that is one reason for the new work bench. LESSONS LEARNED: |
